Why is data important for your division?

Data is the basis for everything we do, and our key focus is on generating the best and most precious insights for our business based on research, analytics and data science. Moreover, we’re building the central data infrastructure for Mediengruppe RTL as well as infrastructure for Bertelsmann like the Bertelsmann identifier. This is the basis for creating and building innovative tools and data products that help us gain a competitive advantage within our industry.

How is data being applied in your division?

Within the Data Alliance, we are the central consulting team who helps businesses within Mediengruppe RTL and Gruner+Jahr in terms of data, insight generation and analyses. We support our broadcasting channels, our subscription video-on-demand offer TVNOW, our publishing businesses as well as our colleagues from AdAlliance and Content Alliance. Our offer includes research on TV audiences or the readership of print and online magazines to help our broadcasters and publishers understand whether they meet the taste of their audiences. We also develop tools and data products for internal customers like AdAlliance or RTL+ aimed at gaining a competitive advantage and to improve our business based on data and analytics. These data products are developed by agile teams of data engineers, data scientists and data product owners.

What role does data play in your job?

I work for the Data Alliance, the center of excellence for all data, analytics and research topics. We are a mixed team of some 200 data business specialists from Mediengruppe RTL, Mediascore, Gruner + Jahr and Cologne Broadcasting Center. I love to work with data and have always been a passionate “data cruncher”. I particularly like the fact that you never know what kind of insights you may find in a set of data. It is never dull, but fascinating and inspiring.
