Meet Sascha...

Name: Sascha
Company: Bertelsmann, Inc.
Location: New York, NY
eMail: sascha.kiener@cbs-edu.de

YOU KNOW YOU'RE FROM NEW YORK CITY WHEN...

You're paying $1,200 for a studio the size of a walk-in closet and you think it's a "steal."

Going to Brooklyn is considered a "road trip."

You say "the city" and expect everyone to know that it means Manhattan.

You run when you see a flashing "Do Not Walk" sign at the intersection.

You have at least 5 "worst cab ride ever" stories.

Describe your educational Background. Where did you study, what degrees did you receive?

I studied in Cologne at the Cologne Business School and just received my Bachelors degree in Media Management.

Describe a typical day at your job:

I think all interns will agree with me that there are no "real" typical days at Bertelsmann. The tasks we have to do differ from day to day and i personally believe that this is the best way to learn for future jobs or studies.
But there are still some typical things that happen every day. After my really short way to the Randomhouse tower I normally arrive there by 9am. Then I get some coffee from our nice Espresso machine to be motivated to start working. Then I start my computer and read my mails and some news before i start my tasks. Usually all Interns as well as Lena, Chris, Mio and Freddy have lunch together. After that i am relaxed to work again on my tasks till i leave usually at 6.

What are your current roles and responsibilities?

At the moment my roles and responsibilities vary from day to day. I already designed a logo for our createyourowncareer Windows Vista widget and did some improvements within the website. We will also start an intern video Podcast and popularize it via Twitter and the Facebook fan page. All the interns will also take and ad new pictures to the website to make it look better.

What qualities do you feel are necessary to be a successful employee at your company?

Creativity, reliability, being open minded, innovative and interested in technology.

Describe your career history. What have been your professional experiences prior to your current position?

Prior to my current position i already did an internship at Bertelsmann in summer 2007 for my university with different tasks than i have now. I mainly worked at the corporate culture website and organized information about the famous universities. I learned a lot during these three months and hope to learn even more this time I am here.

What attracted you to your company and position? What is your favorite thing about your job?

My interest in media what was also the reason to study Media Management led me to Bertelsmann as a media company. My second field of interest is marketing that also fits very good in my tasks here at the moment. To popularize the createyourowncareer website is a perfect combination between media and marketing. For me this internship is a perfect choice and the changing tasks as well as the challenge to my creativity are my favorite things about this job.

What has been your most memorable moment (so far) in your job?

So far the most memorable moment in my job, within the one month I work here, was a photo shoot in Central Park with the other interns in order to get better pictures for the website. Another moment I will ever remember is that my cube door jumped out of its rail and hit the wall on the other side with a really loud bang while I was trying to close it.

If you could meet anyone from history, living or dead, who would it be?

I would really like to meet Albert Einstein to listen what a genius like him has to tell and also to speak about the universe and his theories.

If I were a cartoon character, I would be…

Brian, the dog in "Family Guy" because he is sarcastic and holds everything together.

What qualities do you feel are necessary to be a successful employee at your company?

To my mind there are several qualities needed. First of all the right qualification and then to be able to work in teams, to be creative and communicative. I personally believe that these qualifications are necessary to see and solve problems and bring in new ideas in a productive environment.

Have you had the opportunity to travel as part of your job?

not yet.

Do you feel you have a good understanding of Bertelsmann and it’s corporate culture?

In my opinion the corporate culture of Bertelsmann is absolutely unique. It is the first time i saw such a good teamwork spirit within a company.

My favorite book, movie and artist are…

Illuminati (Dan Brown), Cruel Intentions and James Rizzi

Finally, please write a paragraph or two about yourself, your interests, hobbies, goals, meaningful life experiences, role models, memories, etc.:

What i can tell about myself is that i am very interested in any kind of motorized vehicles, Computers, Photography and Arts. My actual goal for the next years is to get my Masters degree in New York and maybe to start an own business within the next 7 years.
