Name: Sascha
Standort: New York, NY
Firma: Bertelsmann, Inc.

Describe your educational background. Where did you study, what degrees did you receive?

I am currently enrolled in the second semester of my studies in International Business at the University of Applied Sciences (FHDW) in Paderborn, Germany.
My study is a dual one, which consists of theoretical and practical parts. After 3 months of studying at university I have the opportunity to do various placements for collecting practical working experiences.
After my graduation I hope to feel skilled enough to get an interesting job in an international operating company.

Describe your career history. What have been your professional experiences prior to your current position?

Before I started my studies in October 2009 I have worked for 7 years including my apprenticeship as an Information Technology Officer in the IT-Banking-Sector. My former employers were Volksbank Paderborn and Berenberg Bank in Hamburg. The tasks I had to deal with included all types of computer problems which may occur on a daily basis. I provided customer service in response to telephone and ticket inquiries. I was principally involved in the entire user administration (adapting, creating, deleting users). This required, for example, the assignment of permissions via Active Directory and all applications which are used for a daily business.
In addition to this, I supported our mailing system including Blackberry Support.
I am convinced that I am able to contribute myself usefully due to my previous working experiences.

What are your current roles and responsibilities?

During the first days, I got familiar with the Company Structure and the several divisions from Bertelsmann, like connections and tasks. At present, I am working on several projects for the HR Services department. One of these projects I have to deal with is the construction and improvement for our career appearance which you found at www.createyourowncareer.com.

Describe a typical day at your job:

I am starting my working day at 8:30am. First of all I report to my supervisors about passed tasks and progress. Then I ask for new tasks which need to be done. If there are no new tasks I continue with the latest projects or trying to learn new things.
By the way I keep an eye on my mails and my calendar.
At lunch we are going to the cafeteria at the Random House building or get our lunch outside. At 5 pm I am done with my working day.

What attracted you to your company and position? What is your favorite thing about your job?

After 7 years of working in the IT-Banking-Sector I would like to see new branches like for example the media branch, the fashion sector, the food- or the automobile industry.
With the help of Bertelsmann Inc. I would like to discover the media industry. Due to the fact that I like to take on a new challenge in an international corporate environment after my studies, I am convinced that an internship position at Bertelsmann Inc. would be a great international working experience for me. Here in New York you just have so much opportunities regarding job tasks, that it is a pleasure to work here the 2nd time.

What has been your most memorable moment (so far) in your job?

My most memorable moment has been the preparation and presentation with the other interns to my supervisors. The presentation was about the importance about the Web 2.0 and how we might use it for the Bertelsmann’s website! After the presentation, the supervisors were very satisfied and gave us faithfully feedback. This feedback was the best I ever received. It was absolutely professional.

If you could meet anyone from history, living or dead, who would it be?

Wow, that is a really interesting question! Magic Johnson is a person who I admire and appreciate. In the 80’s he was the leader of the legendary Los Angeles Lakers dynasty. He was able to win 5 Championships during this time.
In 1991 after he retired due to his HIV disease many people all over the world could share his pain.
But in 1992 he staged a comeback for the US ‘Dream’ Team at the Olympic Games in Barcelona. He became Olympic Champion and most valuable player!
That was very impressive for me. He is a good example for people who are HIV infected. He is and always has been a champion & fighter, because one of his most important motto was “Never give up”!
Today he is an important and influential business man.

What qualities do you feel are necessary to be a successful employee at your company?

In my opinion you should be an outgoing and flexible person and think out of the box. Moreover you should set clear goals. Working in a team and being an excellent team player round your profile, because together you have much more success.

Have you had the opportunity to travel as part of your job?

No, not yet.

Do you feel you have a good understanding of Bertelsmann and its corporate culture?

I would definitively say yes. In my “settle in” time at Bertelsmann Inc. I spent many hours exploring the culture of this historical company.

My favorite book, movie and artist are:

Book: The Third Twin (Ken Follett)
Movie: Underworld, Munich, Hangover, Resident Evil Artist: Clint Eastwood, Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, Gerard Butler

Finally, please write a paragraph or two about yourself, your interests, hobbies, goals, meaningful life experiences, role models, memories, etc.:

I am interested in completing a successful time during my placement period at Bertelsmann Inc.
Having worked on various large teams throughout my career and I consider myself to be an excellent team player. I am always looking for companies which would allow me to demonstrate my technical and business skills and contribute usefully to the company.
In my spare time I like business news and especially process and workflow optimization. I enjoy most sports, particularly swimming. I was a team member at the 1.PSV (2nd German league) and we did the 4th place from 24 teams in 2006. My minimum time of 50 m Freestyle is 0:24, 76.
Another passion is travelling! I have travelled to China, USA, and Canada. In Europe some of my destinations were England, France or Spain. I like experiencing different cultures and traditions.
